The Legal Information Center (LIC) offers free legal information and referrals to callers and walk-ins seeking assistance with legal issues. We answer questions and provide referrals to anyone who contacts our office including University of Wisconsin students, alumni, faculty, and staff as well as local residents of the Madison community. We are staffed by UW Law School student volunteers and are conveniently located on the UW campus.
Because we are staffed by law school students and not by lawyers, we cannot provide legal advice or review legal documents. However, we are able to offer information about the law surrounding specific legal issues and provide referrals to organizations that may be of further assistance. While we are not able to give legal advice, we are able to provide referrals to attorneys and advocates authorized to give such advice.
Our office is open during the University’s Fall and Spring semesters from 10a.m. - 4p.m., Monday through Friday. We can be contacted by phone at (608) 263-3243 and we accept walk-ins at our office anytime during these hours. Please note, however, that these hours are subject to volunteer availability, so individuals wishing to stop into the office are advised to call first.
